WiserTrail Portugal travel guide cover for the Lisbon Coimbra Porto route

Portugal by Train in 9 Days: Lisbon, Coimbra & Porto

Portugal makes a wonderful destination for a city-focused trip, particularly when you avoid changing hotels every night. Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto can be combined on a clear northbound route. This nine-day itinerary gives you time for neighbourhood walks, food and the occasional slower morning.

Days 1–4: Lisbon

Arrive and explore the neighbourhood around your accommodation. On day two, take your time in Lisbon's central streets and scenic viewpoints; day three can be dedicated to a riverside or cultural area. Use day four for a flexible local excursion or an extra city day instead of trying to see every attraction in one morning.

  • Day 1: arrival and an easy dinner.
  • Day 2: central neighbourhoods, history and viewpoints.
  • Day 3: a waterfront area, museums or markets.
  • Day 4: relaxed exploration or an optional day trip.

Days 5–6: Coimbra

Use day five to travel to Coimbra and settle in. Coimbra's historic university setting and riverside atmosphere make a change of pace from the larger cities. On day six, choose a few cultural stops and leave time for a long lunch. The official Coimbra visitor guide explains the city's main rail connections; check the station for your booked train.

Days 7–9: Porto

Continue to Porto for scenic streets, river walks and food. Choose one or two highlights per day, rather than using your whole visit to run between viewpoint photographs. On the ninth day, follow your departure arrangements; if you fly from Lisbon instead, plan enough travel time and consider rearranging the final nights.

Plan smart

Check train tickets, station names and accommodation locations together. A route can look short on a map but take longer door to door once you add luggage and local transport. Leave buffer time for museums, weather and changes to timetables.
