WiserTrail Japan travel guide cover for the two-week Japan itinerary

Japan in 14 Days: Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima & Osaka

Two weeks in Japan gives you more room than a rushed city-hopping trip. A Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Osaka route can balance big-city energy with historic sites and quieter moments. The best exact route depends on your arrival airport, departure airport and interests.

Days 1–4: Tokyo

Spend the arrival day getting comfortable with the neighbourhood around your hotel. Over the next three days, focus on different areas rather than criss-crossing Tokyo. Traditional streets, contemporary districts, parks and museums can all fit if you limit the number of must-see stops per day.

Days 5–8: Kyoto and a possible Nara day trip

Travel to Kyoto, settle in and explore nearby. Split larger sightseeing days across different parts of the city. Use one day for an optional trip to Nara, or keep it for more time in Kyoto. Follow temple etiquette and check local visitor guidance for crowded residential streets.

Days 9–11: Hiroshima and nearby history

Continue to Hiroshima. The city's peace-related museums and monuments deserve thoughtful, respectful time rather than a hurried stop. If you are planning an island excursion, check current ferries and weather before committing to a tightly timed day.

Days 12–14: Osaka

Finish in Osaka for food, markets and contrasting urban neighbourhoods. Use the final day according to your airport plan, allowing plenty of time for onward connections. It may make sense to change the direction of the route depending on flight prices and where you land.

Booking pointers

  • Check train timetables and rail-pass value using your actual journeys, not assumptions.
  • Keep luggage handling and hotel check-in times in your daily plan.
  • Reserve attractions with fixed-time admission when required.
  • Allow weather alternatives and avoid planning the whole day around one transfer.

Japan's national tourism organisation has a two-week Golden Route example you can compare. Personalise your stops in the WiserTrail Japan Explorer Map or read our Japan Travel Guide.
