Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai? How to Choose Your Northern Thailand Route
Share
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are often mentioned together, but they work best for different kinds of trips. Chiang Mai offers a busy city base and a wide range of day trips, while Chiang Rai appeals to travellers who want distinctive temples, mountain scenery and a slower pace. You do not need to choose only one if you have enough time to explore Northern Thailand.
Choose Chiang Mai if you like a busy base
Chiang Mai is a good starting point for food, markets, cafés, historic temples and activities within a relatively active city. It is also a base for visits toward Doi Suthep, the surrounding countryside and other parts of Chiang Mai province. Try grouping attractions by area instead of crossing the city multiple times in a day.
Choose Chiang Rai if temples and quieter routes appeal to you
Chiang Rai is known for places such as Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple), Wat Rong Suea Ten (the Blue Temple), Wat Huay Pla Kang and Baan Dam Museum. These are separate attractions with their own opening rules, fees and visiting etiquette. Add a café or viewpoint stop only if you have time to enjoy it rather than rushing between photographs.
Where does Phayao fit in?
Phayao and the Chiang Kham area can be appealing for travellers seeking a more local northern stop between better-known destinations. Less tourist-heavy areas can have limited English-language transport information, so make sure your route and return arrangements are realistic.
How many nights?
- 3–4 nights: focus on one city and its surroundings.
- 5–7 nights: divide your time between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai if you are comfortable with a transfer day.
- 8–10 nights: consider adding Phayao or another quieter stop, rather than scheduling an excursion every morning.
Helpful details before you book
Mountain roads, seasonality and air quality can affect what is comfortable to do. During periods of poor air quality, choose activities accordingly and check local official information. Temples are active religious spaces: cover up appropriately, follow signs and ask before photographing people.
